Athletics is a very versatile sport. Running, throwing, and jumping feature in various ways across the many different disciplines that athletics has to offer. At the youth level, many disciplines are already practiced and offered, often in a simple manner and, above all, through play. This provides young athletes with a broad foundation in which the joy of movement is central. Training at GVAC is structured according to the Dutch Athletics Federation’s youth vision, in which fun and a sense of achievement are key pillars.
In athletics, children are divided into categories based on their year of birth:
- U8: you will turn 7 next calendar year (mini-pupil)
- U9: you will turn 8 next calendar year (C-pupil)
- U10: you will turn 9 next calendar year (B-pupil)
- U12: you will turn 10 or 11 next calendar year (A-pupil)
- U14: you will turn 12 or 13 next calendar year (junior D)
- U16: you will turn 14 or 15 next calendar year (junior C)
- U18: you will turn 16 or 17 next calendar year (junior B)
- U20: you will turn 18 or 19 next calendar year (junior A)
Group changes take place every year on October 1st.
If you think athletics is something for you or would like to sign up for a trial period, please follow these steps:
- View the explanation regarding training for pupils and juniors below.
- Completely fill out the registration form. Select Competition Athlete Pupil/Junior CD/Junior AB based on the categories above. By doing so, you (or your child) provisionally register with GVAC. You can register children from the age of 6.
- We will contact you as soon as possible to let you know when the trial period can start. For the youngest categories, there may be a waiting list, meaning it may take a while before your child can start the trial period.
- After the trial period, and if you or your child wishes to become a permanent member, we will convert the provisional membership into a permanent membership. You will only start paying membership fees from that moment on.
Questions or comments?
We are always happy to hear them; you can email info@gvac.nl for general questions. For questions regarding the categories up to and including U10 (BC-Mini pupils), please contact karlijn.gvac@gmail.com. For questions regarding U12 (A-pupils), please contact sjoerd.rikkers@gvac.nl.
Pupil trainings
Pupillen Trainingen
.
The pupils train twice a week, but you are also welcome to come once a week. That is perfectly fine in athletics. In principle, training sessions always take place; however, when the weather is so bad (code yellow/orange/red) that responsible training is not possible, a training session is cancelled. We will announce this via the WhatsApp group for pupils. Training can still take place in light rain.
What do the pupils train?
Pupils train in all kinds of different running, throwing, and jumping events. We do this based on the events featured in the Athletic Champs. The Athletic Champs events are used in most pupil competitions. During the winter forest training, endurance running is the focus, and this is offered in various game formats.

Expectations of you as a parent
We expect a number of things from parents when your child comes to play sports at GVAC:
- Encouraging the children, though if they don’t feel like it for once, that is of course fine.
- Helping out where necessary; at many matches and training sessions, all help is welcome and often necessary.
- Keeping the trainers informed of what is going on and what we can or must take into account.
- Watching the TRACK training is allowed along the side of the court, behind the fence. It is not intended for you as a parent to walk across the field. Keep any other children who are not participating with you and do not let them play with the equipment, for example.
- Unfortunately, watching the INDOOR training is not allowed. This is only permitted on the sidelines during the last 5 minutes of the training. (There is an exception for the first 2 training sessions for new children; then a parent is allowed to watch in the hall).
- The trainers are responsible for your child during training. It helps best if you also let your child listen to the trainer and do not give instructions yourself as a parent. (After the training, there is an opportunity to ask the trainers questions about the approach or procedures.)
- Therefore, always follow the instructions of the trainer(s).
- See above on this page for the registration procedure for trial training sessions. This also applies to brothers, sisters, friends, and girlfriends. Bringing others along (even just once) must always be done in consultation with the trainers. Under the heading ‘Communication’, you can see who is responsible for this for each category.
- During training sessions, it is not permitted to take photos or videos of the training, the trainers, or children other than your own.
- If your child is bothered by something or is in pain before the training, it is often better to skip a training session than to only be able to participate partially.
Junior trainings
Pupillen Trainingen
.
In principle, the juniors train twice a week, but you can also come once a week and, in consultation, an extra training moment during the week can also be considered. In principle, the training sessions always take place, only when the weather is so bad (code yellow/orange/red) that responsible training is not possible, a training session is cancelled. We will pass this on via the WhatsApp group for juniors. Training can take place in light rain.
What do we train?
GVAC offers all children up to the age of 16 the opportunity to participate in multi-camp training. Juniors train all the different running, throwing and jumping components (or preparation therefor) of athletics. In addition, attention is paid to the more general physical development of the children. For junior athletes who show that they are ‘more motivated’ it is possible, in consultation with the training coordinator and trainers, to participate in multiple or different training sessions.
Trainings
The U16 (old juniors C) and U14 (old juniors D) train twice a week outside on the GVAC track during the summer period, from April to the end of October. On Mondays and Wednesdays. This is the same in the winter period, some groups also train partly in the hall.
